Calgary based artist, producer and songwriter, Jimmy “Chefbeatz” Tenga, has honoured his
musical skill in Afro Swing since 2017. Born in Sierra Leone, Chef travelled through Western
Africa - Guinea, Ghana and the Ivory Coast, before landing in Canada. Though he began his
musical journey as a Hip Hop focused producer, as a teenager, he quickly began to deploy
West African culture into his musical sound, developing a perfect synergy between Hip
Hop/R&B/Pop with West African Afro style music.
This evolution and unique integration of cultures has driven Chef’s creation of a new sound in
Afro Swing. Whether it’s his use of Afro-style drums on Jazzy melodies or traditional African
sounds over Hip Hop percussion, it is his unique take on these elements that has allowed Chef
to push the boundaries in music production. A musical storyteller, who explores depth and
movement in his compositions.
In 2020, Chef plans to release an Extended Play (EP) album featuring some of the artists he
has worked with, to showcase his musical journey.
