Biography

I'm a professional musician with a passion for all things music and the guitar, with over 25 years of playing and teaching experience that includes gigging/touring, composition, session work, film scoring, product demonstrations and tuition clinics.

I released a selection of original compositions in 2014, a 5 song E.P. Seven Voices in March 2016, a new instrumental entitled
Of Peace, October 2016 and a new vocal song entitled The Fool, June 2017. Music on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Jango, Apple, etc. Co-wrote and performed on the 2016 album by progressive rock band Red Spectrum.

I grew up in South East England, played in a diverse array of bands, studied at Canterbury Christchurch University and later studied jazz improvisation with guitarist Jimmy Bruno. In my twenties I moved to the US and split my time between teaching and performing with my jazz/blues group Rob Garland & The Blue Monks. The band released several albums of original music and played hundreds of gigs at festivals and clubs as well as international television and radio performances.

After being featured in numerous guitar magazines my first instructional book entitled Jazz For The Blues Guitarist was published through Cherry Lane Music in 2007, which led to me working for TrueFire.

Currently I live in Los Angeles where I write & perform with various musicians including my group Rob Garland's Eclectic Trio.

I am a guitar instructor for TrueFire, with an online interactive classroom Guitar Babylon, an Artist Channel: Babylon, TF Private Lessons and DVD courses entitled The Guitarist's Pentathlon, Chord Navigator: CAGED Triads and a new foundry course soon to be released entitled Melodic Soloing: The Major Scale.

I also teach guitar via Skype and record session guitar parts from my studio in Los Angeles.

Artists I've worked with include Jimmy Haslip (The Yellowjackets), Andy Sanesi (Scott Henderson), Tony Newton (Gary Moore) Mick Stevens (Brand X) and Gus Thornton (Albert King/S.R.V.)

Influenced by "everyone from Joni Mitchell to Frank Zappa." :-)
