YaWoda is an international singer, songwriter and music producer. She is originally from Togo, West Africa and moved to the United States over 20 years ago spending time in Maryland, New York and Cleveland. YaWoda’s vocal range and style fuses genres including Gospel, jazz, R&B, neo-soul, opera, blues, reggae and Afro-beat. YaWoda is fluent and sings in several languages including French, English, Creole, Yoruba and Ewe (her native language).
Spending more than half of her life in the music industry, YaWoda has been blessed with the opportunity to travel and perform in Africa, Europe and in the United States. In 2013, after singing and performing covers for years, YaWoda started writing and producing her own material which include her first single “I need a good man” in 2015 as well as "Boy Bye", "Not Coming Back" and "Kenyatta" in more recent years.
With a lyrical sensitivity to her compositions and performances, her music draws listeners in with subtlety and introspective levity. Bringing a distinctive angle to her delivery, she creates opportunities for improvisation and discovery. Proud and respectful of her African heritage, but fearlessly adventurous, YaWoda has a vision to create a new genre of music that has a universal message of freedom, peace and love.
YaWoda’s ultimate goal is to promote diversity and acceptance and to become an advocate of education and health care for African women and children and ensuring their equitable treatment in all societies. She believes that because music plays a vital role in the lives of people everywhere, it is an essential tool for a better world.
