Marq Van Alstyne was one of the first independent artists to distribute music digitally online. Van Alstyne had been in a few garage bands throughout the 90's, but none really amounted to performing more than a couple very small shows or house parties. Then in the late 90's while working in a Tower Records store that also sold computer software, he learned to make music with midi and loop based DAW's(DIgital Audio Workstation), such as Cakewalk and Acid Pro. He released his first track of many comedy bits under the name name Alcoholic Skunk & Company on January 20th, 2001 .
In 2002 he dropped the comedy and "& Company." Switching to more of a shock rock vibe called Alcoholic Skunk. The lyrics were very explicit, even for the time, getting a couple songs pulled from MP3.com. The same year he rounded up a few local musicians to attempt to make Alcoholic Skunk become a live entity, but it never really fully materialized.
From 2004 to 2005, Van Alstyne played several open mics in Vancouver, WA and Portland, Or, singing to small sets of Alcoholic Skunk music, burned on cds, calling it “original karaoke”
Van Alstyne slowed way down on making any music until 2012 with "Vote For Nobody In 2012," a song about his frustration with the two party political system in the United States. This was his first song he released on platforms such as Itunes and Spotify.
Van Alstyne then spent the next 8 years, learning about other methods of creating music on the computer, such as VST's(Virtual Studio Technology) and more modern DAW'S such as Ableton Live and Studio One.
.
In the spring of 2020, while recovering from a broken leg during the covid-19 pandemic, he decided to start doing music again, but using his real name and more to a pg-13 audience
