Biography

I'm a bilingual fiction writer, translator, and lyricist from France, though most of my writing is in English.

As a lyricist, I've had three CD's released with a fourth on the way:

MSA Project "Istree" (Dec 2010 / hard rock-prog metal / wrote all 15 tracks)
Skeem "Just suggesting" (Oct 2013 / neo-prog / wrote 8 out of 15 tracks)
Tricky Monkey "The world outside" (Jan 2024 / blues-rock / wrote 5 out of 8 tracks)

The fourth is a rock opera titled "In Odin's name," composed by Justin Radford, that's due out sometime this year.

As an author, I've published a novel ("Everlife"), a collection of short stories ("To worlds of wonder"), an ongoing space opera serial on Royal Road ("Through the stars, darkly"), over 50 short stories that are free to read on my blog (https://xenin.substack.com/), and 12 epic fantasy novellas under the Steffen Larken pen name. A few of my shorts have also appeared in various anthologies.

As a translator, I've translated to French short stories, non-fiction, and also novels (including the first 12 installments in Michael Anderle's "The Kurtherian Gambit" series).

Circling back to lyrics, since that's what I'm here for... I can write to existing music or provide words upfront that you can compose to--I'm comfortable with both approaches, though perhaps with a slight preference for the latter method.

I do have a preference (as you might have guessed from reading the above) for Science-Fiction and Fantasy themes, but I can write other types of lyrics as well... though (fair warning) love songs are not what I do best.

Please note that I do not do rap or country.

I have a particular fondness for concept albums. I've been cataloguing all the songs I've written over the years and noticed I've started 28 concept albums in the past 30 years! Admittedly, only 11 of these are fully written (just two of which have been set to music so far), though many of the others are very close to completed.

My genres of preference are progressive rock, metal, classic rock, rock, and blues. Though I'm willing to work on pop and reggae projects and possibly other genres, so long as the music inspires me (that's really the primary requirement).

Some of my favorite artists include: Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, Shadow Gallery, Led Zeppelin, Peter Hammill, Toto, Supertramp, Duran Duran, Savatage, Pink Floyd, Queen, Pain of Salvation, Dream Theater, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, Anathema, David Bowie, Deep Purple, U2, Roger Hodgson, Styx, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Rush, Queensrÿche, and so many more...

French artists I love: Ange, Sortilège, Noir Désir, H-F. Thiéfaine, Jean-Louis Murat, Gérard Manset, Jean Guidoni, William Sheller, and Francis Cabrel.

Feel free to ask if you want to know anything else.

Oh! And I almost forgot, if you want to see some of my lyrics, you can check my Soundcloud profile--I haven't updated it in like 8 years (!) but the stuff on there is still relevant. The lyrics for each song are available, just click on the titles to read them.

Recording Setup

As a writer, I mostly use writing software--namely Word, LibreOffice, and Obsidian. Though I've recently started using Scrivener--initially for my fiction writing, though in the last few days I've been importing all of my lyrics into it and plan to use it to write my next ones. It should make keeping track of my work so much easier!
