I am a retired Computer Programmer. I wrote many songs between the ages of 14 and 21, then I got a job and got married and had little time for music, except for going to Song Circles. I was in several folk music groups over the years and recorded the songs I wrote with whatever technology I could afford.
About 5 years ago I started collaborating with a local friend and putting songs on YouTube. My friend is no longer involved, so I use Band in a Box software as a songwriting tool and use some of its Midi instruments, primarily percussion, piano and 1 or 2 backing guitars.. I usually add my own guitar (acoustic, electric, rhythm, lead), bass guitar and often my 45-50 year old electric piano, and sometimes, harmonica. I am not a professional singer, although my singing is OK. I am on Kompoz.com under the name frederic but I might leave it. I have had several successful collaborations on that site. Because of Band in a Box I tend to upload a partly-complete backing track, often looking for a lead guitar or lyrics. I have written lyrics and added chords and a tune to others' lyrics. I have had no trouble getting collaborators for my songs-I have often had next-day responses.
Studio One 6, Band in a Box, learning Mixbus Pro.
A dedicated desktop computer.
I just bought a 43" 4K TV as a monitor.
I have a high quality stereo system with 5.1 surround sound and 2 smaller 2-channel stereos in other rooms with sub-woofers, which are good for testing my mixes.
I do not use studio monitors, but rather use studio headphones (open backed).
I have a room divider behind where I record which soaks up some of the ambient noise. It is setup in my living room. I have to turn off the air conditioning/heating when I record. I get very good sound quality,
I have 4 high quality German mics.
