Hi,
2 questions:
1) If I wanted to do a project where every audition for a particular song part was accepted then voted on by the community and only the winning part kept in the project, would that work? Would it mess with rights sharing and such? Is it a horrible idea? Can the same be accomplished in a less disruptive way by making auditions public? Please advise...
2) Is there a way to save a project as a draft? For example, I paused before posting the project to get the previous question answered before making a grievous error. I had to open all this in a new window, and I'll probably have to leave my computer on or save stuff I've entered into Word or something in case the answer takes a while. Saving a draft of the project would be helpful.
3) Haha - bonus question I just thought of: Why are there character limits to the project brief? I'm having a hard time trying to explain how I want this project to work in only 1000 characters. Maybe I need to learn shorthand... or learn to shut up...
Thanks in advance for your input, whoever you may be.

Hey Rob, I’ll try my best to answer your questions. Then Lee can chime in when he is available.

1. Accepting all auditions for your project is fine, as long as it is clear to the members auditioning that (although accepted) their respective contributions might not be used in the final song, and will be ultimately chosen by the community. As long as you explain that in your project brief, it’s all good.

Sure, you can do that by making the auditions public. That way the community can listen to the auditions, then vote for which they prefer, by leaving a comment on your project, or contacting you via PM.

Is it a horrible idea? Not at all, but you’ll have to get the community to listen to the auditions & vote.

2. Saving a project as a draft? It kind of already does. You can start a project and begin to set it up, then close your window or even sign out of your account – then once you sign back into your account, your project will still be there, right where you left off, it doesn’t automatically delete. It will still be on your Dashboard/Projects.

3. Haha, yeah there is a limit of 1000 characters for the project brief. That can probably be increased fairly easily methinks. I’ll discuss it with Lee ASAP.

Hey Rob

Just gonna add my $0.02.

1. As Dani said, either way can work and are fine. Setting auditions as 'public' is probably the best approach in general, as it is clear that they remain as auditions, and also, any member can then listen to them. But bear in mind that if you set the public auditions option, you can't change it to 'private' for the project later on. Also, you can't make comments on individual audition tracks.

If you accept the auditions, there are no issues with rights. If you have a look at any of the collaboration agreements you'll see that it mentions that you (as the pm) have the right to not use anything in the completed project. And for the duration of the project, everyone who contributes retains full ownership in their own contributions. It is only once you complete the project that it becomes a joint work.

2. There is no way to save a draft. But then, I guess there are only two fields (description and brief) that would be worth saving. Might be an idea so we'll keep it in mind. In the mean time, probably the best approach, as Dani said, is to just start the project and come back to it later. But I would had, make it as a private or secret project. Then it doesn't get posted in the stream that "Rob started a project" and nobody can see your half finished sentences. When you come back to it and you're ready, just un-secret it.

3. Good point! Think this is something that we can open up a bit more.

And, another $0.10 worth..

We've increased the project 'brief' space - should be more than enough now - and also added a new 'save draft' option to the project creation page. So when you are starting a new project, you can save the information as a draft, without needing to actually start the project. You can go back and 'start a new project' at any time, and your draft info will be in place. You can also find a reminder in the activities section on your Dashboard.

Check it out and let us know if it helps..

I like that save as draft option. There are times I want to start a project but don't really have all my ducks in a row and it will be nice to kind of build it up in sections. My biggest problem right now is dedicated time to work on music. Great feature.

Glad you like it, Tony. You can thank Rob for mentioning that one :)

MonkeyC - worth every dime of $0.10! (see what I did there, lol) Holy cow! Y'all are great! And efficient! I had no idea my questions would result in site changes. I was just hoping for good answers, which I also got before the changes - thanks! I'm very happy to be a member here, and super excited that I can be more active now that I can dedicate most of my time to it.
As far as the project, I'm leaning toward the public audition route. It's all a big experiment anyway, so we'll see...
Thank you Raven and MonkeyC, you are the best!

Next question - same project. If I set talent needed to, say, "Melody Writer", then I do a "Find Artists" search by talent of "Melody Writer", I should a list of members that got an email saying their talents are needed on my project, right?
