Is there a way to set my iBand so anyone can just join?

No. Only the iBand administrator can add people to an iBand.
iBands are a feature designed to support collaborators that work regularly together, want to have a unique 'band' like identity on the site, and want to share administrative access within their joint projects rather than have just one person direct it. For example, all iBand members can change the project title, description, genre, delete tracks, and perform most other administrative tasks. However, only the iBand administrator is able to Close and Complete projects.

As the Administrator, I think you can add people.

It would be cool if certain iBands did not require an admin to authorize/add members - like an open door policy.

We'd never say "no" to an idea or suggestion, but this is something we'd have to carefully consider. The idea behind the iBands feature is to allow members, who usually work together, be able to represent themselves as an actual band. If different members were to freely come and go as they pleased, there wouldn't be any consistency. It wouldn't really be considered an iBand, but more like an open project. We'll have to think about this some more.

What about a hippie commune reserve, a forum and such for all the free lovers to congregate and discuss and share as if 1969 were a perpetual summer.
