Project Summary

Description: This song comes from a time when I was writing a lot as a songwriter. It was rejected by the industry for having lyrics that were considered too intense or too heavy for today's market. But I still think it's a beautiful piece—raw, emotional, and honest. So I’m putting it out

Project brief: Ideally, I’d love to hear Dany [Raven] on vocals. I won’t be taking an active role in this myself — I’m handing it over to you, and I’m truly curious to see what you make of it. You’re welcome to use the entire song as it is — that way, it retains its depth and emotion. Of course, with new instrumentation and fresh vocals, it can take on a life of its own. Surprise me.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] They met down by the riverside Two strangers watchin’ stars go by They talked for hours, side by side With laughin’ hearts and open eyes They’d go out dancin’ Friday nights Share cornbread, whiskey, jokes and dreams Just friends who stayed ‘til mornin’ light But love was hid behind the scenes [Chorus 1] They didn’t know what they had found Just two souls messin’ ‘round But somethin’ deeper took its place In every smile, in every face [Verse 2] One quiet night, she held her hand They kissed where no one else could see A love that bloomed in borrowed land A fire burnin’ secretly They loved like thunder in the rain No shame, no rules, no need to hide But love don’t always beat the pain When small town whispers start to slide [Chorus 2] They gave their hearts in secret ways But not all hearts know when to stay And love that’s true can still get lost When lies get told and lines get crossed [Bridge] Another girl came stirrin’ hate She wanted Bri, she played her part She twisted truth and sealed their fate And drove a wedge in Jenny’s heart Brianna turned, she walked away She didn’t hear Jen’s broken voice She let that poison lead her stray And left her with a silent choice [Verse 3] Now Jenny sleeps beneath the hill Where wildflowers cry in morning dew Her heart gave out, too hurt to heal She died believin’ love was true She wrote a letter no one read Until the day the lies came clear And Bri just wept beside her bed Still hearin’ Jenny callin’ near [Chorus 3] She died of hurt too deep to name Too much of truth, too much of blame Bri’d give it all to turn time back But ghosts don’t walk the same old track
