If you attach an empty tin can to the end of a piece of string, you have a great set up for recording rock vocals IMHO. Just be sure to pull it tight.

Isn't that the way we communicate? ;)

I guess the problem for vocalists and mics is, you won't really know until you get to put the two together. That said, I don't think you can go too far wrong by adding a Shure SM57 (or 58) to your collection.
And don't go forgetting to add one new mic to your Santa list every year :)

I know, that's true. And it sucks to have to spend money on one, then later realize that ya wish you would've bought a different one.

Ann and I were playing and singing with a friend the other day and we trialled the Shure beta 58's against the Samson Q7 and both Ann and I felt the Samson's were better suited to the job. They were warmer and the high end less piercing, now I know this is not recording but the one thing that a vocalist who sings rock needs, is confidence. The thing we noticed was that the fidelity of the Samson was much less which lent it to the job we were doing, loud guitar, bass and drums. From my own experience the more I punch my voice and the grittier I get, the more I look for a dynamic. The condenser still gets used far more but for jobs like these I will always use a 58 style mic.

More warmth, less piercing - that is what I am looking for, at least for when I sing Rock. I like the sound of the Samson Q8 when the guy spoke through it in the video, I also liked the sound through the Sennheiser E835. Sooo many decisions.

I liked the ND767A too but here's the rub, you can't tell which one will suit till you use it, you'll know as soon as you use it for you will sing with confidence. BTW room noise is no issue with a dynamic but it will still be prone to plosives.

I read a lot about the plosives, especially with the ND767A. I'm kind of going back & forth between the EV, Shure & Samson. Maybe these ALL should go on my Santa list. :))

How many mic pres do you have?
Nice to see your Uncle at last Joe.
That's a neat trick, makes sense to do too but I don't think it covers what she is asking, hers is a tonal thang. It's like you plugging your Tele into a clean channel on a solid state amp and trying to grunge it up, it just wont have that warmth and make you feel good as you play.
Maybe it would do well to record both mics

If the shrillness that Dani was experiencing was a result of her backing off the mic in order to avoid clipping then it would address her problem.

I'm betting that even if she takes 15 dB off she'll still lift the roof :)
Not to mention she can talk in short hand and do 2000 words per minute.
it sounds like we need one mic to rule them all.

I decided on a ND 767a, and I'm really, really, really, really, really, happy with it thus far. :)
